Check a school before paying

The listings below are research leads. A directory category or a school’s marketing claim does not establish that a particular course meets your licensing needs. Confirm the provider, location and exact training type in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry when ELDT applies, and check your state’s licensing instructions.

Use the same questions for every school

  1. Program fit: Which class and endorsements does the course cover? What vehicle and transmission will you train and test in?
  2. Actual instruction: How are theory, range and public-road training delivered? What is the student-to-vehicle arrangement, and how is your own behind-the-wheel time recorded?
  3. Complete cost: Request tuition, permits, medical requirements, testing, retests, equipment, transport and lodging in one written estimate. Ask which items are paid to another organization.
  4. Schedule: Confirm start and end expectations, attendance requirements and the process when weather, a vehicle issue or an unavailable test appointment causes a delay.
  5. Contract: Read refund, withdrawal, financing and employment-linked repayment terms before paying.
  6. Outcome claims: Ask how completion, pass and placement rates were calculated, which students were counted and what period the figures cover.

A comparison you can complete

Make one column per school and one row per question. Mark unanswered items “not confirmed.” An unknown cost is not zero. If School A quotes $5,000 and School B quotes $4,500, but B excludes $800 of required expenses included by A, B’s illustrated total becomes $5,300. Those figures are examples, not market prices.

Keep the written quote, relevant contract and date of each conversation. Verify an outside grant or benefit directly with the administering program; being admitted to school does not guarantee funding. For the overall sequence, use our CDL application and training roadmap. If a listing is outdated, send its URL through our corrections contact.
